PutMask is a privacy tool. It would be strange to write a privacy policy full of things we do not do, so this one only describes what actually happens. It is written from the app’s source code, not from a template.
If anything here is unclear, write to support@putmask.com.
The short version
- Your videos, photos and audio never leave your phone. All detection, blurring and exporting happens on the device. There is no upload and no cloud processing. The app works with no internet connection at all.
- We do not use analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services. No Google Analytics, no Firebase, no advertising SDK, no advertising ID. There are no ads in PutMask.
- We never see your payment details. Purchases are handled by Google Play. Your name, address, email and card details go to Google, not to us — we never receive them.
- If you buy premium, our licence server does receive a small amount of data so we can check the purchase is genuine. That is described in full below, and it is the only thing the app sends about you on its own.
What the app sends, and when
1. Nothing at all, if you use the free version
Open the app, pick a video, blur it, export it. In that whole flow nothing is sent anywhere. You can put the phone in airplane mode and every feature except the in-app tutorials still works.
2. When you buy or restore premium
Google Play handles the payment itself. When it tells the app a purchase
succeeded, the app contacts our licence server at putmask.com to
check that the purchase is real and to record that this phone is using it.
That request contains:
- The product identifier — which premium item was bought.
- The Google Play purchase token — a long random string Google issues for that purchase. It is what lets us ask Google “is this genuine?”. It is not a payment method and cannot be used to charge you.
- The app version number.
The server replies with whether the purchase is valid, when it expires, and how many device slots are used. It does not send us your name, your email address, your Google account, your card, your billing address or your location, Google does not give those to us and we do not ask for them.
This happens when you buy, when the app re-checks an existing purchase, and if you release a device slot to move premium to another phone.
We keep these records for as long as the purchase is active, plus 12 months.
3. Only if you read the preview and tap “Send”
When something goes wrong, PutMask writes a small text file on your phone describing the error. Those files are never sent automatically. They sit on your device and do nothing at all unless you choose to send them.
If you tap the send button on the home screen, the app does not upload anything yet. It opens a window that shows you the exact contents of every file that would be sent, so you can read them first. Sending stays switched off until you tick a box confirming you have read them, and you can cancel at any point. Nothing leaves the phone unless you tick the box and press Send.
What is uploaded is the file name and the text inside it — the technical error message. It does not include the folder path, your video, or any part of it.
Error logs are deleted within 90 days.
4. When you open the in-app tutorials
The Guide inside the app loads tutorial pages from putmask.com.
That is an ordinary web request, so our web server sees what any web server sees:
your IP address, the page requested, and your device’s user agent string. This is
the same as visiting the site in a browser. We do not link it to your purchase or
to your Android ID.
Permissions the app asks for
- Photos and videos — to read the video you choose and to save the finished one. The app only ever opens the file you pick.
- Internet — used for the three things listed above and nothing else. It is not used to send your media.
- Notifications — to tell you when a long export has finished.
- Vibrate — for touch feedback in the editor.
- Billing — so Google Play can process a premium purchase.
Things we do not do
- We do not upload, store, view or process your videos, photos or audio.
- We do not collect your name, email address, phone number or postal address.
- We do not collect or store payment card details.
- We do not collect your location.
- We do not use your advertising ID, and we show no ads.
- We do not build a profile of you or track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not sell or rent any data to anyone, and never have.
- We do not use third-party analytics or crash-reporting services.
Who else is involved
Google Play processes purchases and is the only third party in the picture. What Google collects is covered by Google’s privacy policy. We receive only the purchase token described above.
Hostinger hosts our website and licence server. The servers are in France, inside the European Union, so nothing described on this page is transferred outside the EEA.
Your rights
Because we hold so little, most requests are simple. You can ask us what is stored against your purchase, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to support@putmask.com and include the Google Play order ID from your receipt so we can find the right record.
Deleting your licence record means premium will stop working on your devices until the purchase is re-checked, so tell us if that is what you intend.
If you are in the EEA or UK, our legal basis for the licence check is performance of a contract — we cannot give you the premium features you paid for without confirming the purchase. Error log uploads rely on your consent, given by ticking the box in the preview window and pressing Send. You can withhold it simply by cancelling, and nothing in the app stops working if you do. You have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
If you are in California, we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA, and we have not done so in the past twelve months.
Children
PutMask is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them. We have no accounts and no sign-up, so there is nothing for a child to register.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the app sends, we will change this page and update the date at the top. Material changes will be called out in the app’s release notes.
